Zishun Qiao is a visiting graduate student in the High Altitude Observatory at NCAR in collaboration with Dr. Nick Pedatella. She is from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and started her visit through NCAR's Advanced Study Program's Graduate Student (GVP) Fellowship. Her current research focuses on combining observations from meteor radars with SD-WACCMX simulations to investigate the response of planetary waves, tides, and gravity waves to sudden stratospheric warmings (SSW) in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region, particularly the wave-wave interactions triggered by SSWs.
Zishun’s research interests include mechanisms of energy and momentum transfer carried by MLT wave generation, propagation, and dissipation; wave-wave nonlinear interactions across the scales of planetary waves, tides, and gravity waves, and their ionospheric effects. She’s also interested in developing the next-generation ground-based MLT instruments such as multi-static meteor radar and OH airglow imager networks.
